Green Green Loving

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching and love in the air.  So why not bring a little green into the bedroom!  Couples who choose all-natural, non-toxic lubricants do themselves and the earth a big favor.

More than 25% of couples use lubricants during lovemaking.  But most lubricants are full of toxins, such as propylene glycol and methylparaben, and contain ingredients derived from petroleum.  And these toxins can have harmful effects ranging from skin irritations to cancer.  According to an article on time.com, most lubricants contain ingredients that are also found in oven cleaners, brake fluid and antifreeze!  For more information about the safety of your lubricant, check it out at EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database.

Fortunately, more and more all-natural, non-toxic lubricants are beginning to hit the market!  You can even make your own homemade lubricants using things like coconut oil, almond oil, or flax seeds.  Just check with your doctor if you will be using them with a condom because some natural and homemade lubricants can contain ingredients that can interfere with the safe use of condoms.

And if your goal this Valentine’s Day is to conceive a child, it is even more important to avoid conventional lubricants, which may contain toxins that can lead to developmental and reproductive toxicity.  A baby is most vulnerable to the effects of toxic chemicals during those first few weeks of pregnancy, before you even know if you are pregnant!

In fact, most lubricants, natural or not, can interfere with your ability to conceive a child.  Some lubricants can contain ingredients that are toxic to sperm.  And the lubricant doesn’t have to contain spermicide in order to destroy sperm.  Even all-natural lubricants, whether store-bought or homemade, can interfere with the ability of sperm to reach the cervical mucus.

If you want to go even greener in the bedroom, you can now find phthalate- and plastic-free toys made out of materials such as wood, stainless steel and glass.  Lambskin condoms are made from natural membranes and are completely biodegradable (but they do not protect against STDs).
