Getting Crafty When It’s Cold Outside

One of my resolutions for the new year is to spend more quality time with my son (who has requested to be called Monster in my posts from now on).  During the warmer months, we love to spend time outdoors hiking or playing at a local park.  But now that the weather is painfully cold, we have decided that our quality time should consist of board games, cooking and crafts.  Each week I will attempt to post the results of our crafts and cooking activities.

This week we were inspired by the cold.

We made “snowball” sculptures with marshmallows and toothpicks.  The idea for this project came from The Artful Parent blog (thanks!).

I crafted a tree out of paper bags taped together and then taped it on our large living room window.  Monster then decorated the glass with Crayola window crayons.  During the spring, we will add leaves but for now it is a winter wonderland (with flowers).

And then, because we are dreaming of spring, we decided to make walnut pirate ships and sail them in a bowl of blue water.  This great craft came from Heidi Kenney’s book Every Day’s a Holiday: Year-Round Crafting with Kids.  I simply emptied out a half walnut shell, lit a beeswax candle and then let the wax drip into the shell.  As the wax cooled, Monster held a toothpick in it until it could stand on its own.  We decorated our own pirate sails and we were ready to sail the open seas!
